Soil Carbon Sequestration Project
QMAG has engaged local soil health and grazing experts RCS to investigate the feasibility of a grazing-based soil carbon sequestration pilot project on the Kunwarara mine site.
An approved method under the Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) Scheme, soil carbon sequestration is a way that we can potentially offset some of our CO2 emissions, whilst also providing land improvement co-benefits through improving soil carbon and thus soil health.
On his second visit to the mine in 2024, RCS Advisor & Coach Dom Walker confirmed to QMAG’s Emissions Reduction Officer Dr John McGrath the improvement potential of the existing soil of our mine site with the proven technique of time-controlled grazing. Using this method, the soil in a paddock benefits from periods with cattle acting as a natural source and spreader of nitrogen, which in turn encourages enhanced plant growth and thus carbon uptake during rest periods.
