From our Ore to Your Door - Episode 12: Magnesite Stockpiling, Reclaiming and Blending - Parkhurst
Stockpiling:
Magnesite ore is delivered 70kms by truck to Parkhurst from QMAG’s Kunwarara mine site. To maintain production demand, typically 30 truckloads of magnesite deliveries are required each day. When the ore reaches Parkhurst, it is stored in stockpiles of several thousand tonnes, with each stockpile graded by its chemical purity.
Various stockpiles are generally constructed based on differing previously analysed grades of ore so that they can be used for blending to the required chemical requirements.
Incoming loads of magnesite are emptied into the dump hopper at the southern end of the stockpile area and stacked onto the designated stockpile zone. There are eight zones having the capacity to store 30Kmt of magnesite serviceable by the stacker. There are three additional zones not serviced by the stacker where trucks can dump directly onto the stockpile storage area.
A travelling, luffing stacker moves along railway lines and is used in conjunction with a conveyor running through the centre of the stockpile area to deliver product from the receival hopper to the specified zone.
Reclaiming:
Magnesite is reclaimed from the stockpiles by frontend loader and delivered to any one of three reclaim hoppers based on the stockpile location. Conveyor transfer systems deliver the material from the reclaim hoppers to each Multi-Hearth Furnace feed bin ready for processing.
To meet the specific magnesite chemical composition for each MHF, a ratio of bucket loads from various stockpiles is calculated. These loading instructions are issued to the frontend loader driver to ensure the correct blend is being used for each MHF.
